Are you making this mistake when it comes to your hip pain? Over the past few years, I’ve seen many yogis who have hip pain only focus on stretching the hips to relieve their discomfort. While stretching can provide temporary relief, it's not the complete solution. One of the best things you can begin doing today to find relief from your achy hips is to strengthen your core.

Understanding the Body's Interconnection

The body is interconnected. Your spine is connected to your hips, shoulders, and head. Your muscles and soft tissues are also interconnected. Therefore, building mobility and strength in your torso is a must. In fact, if you have lower back pain, it could be coming from your hips and vice versa. It is crucial to work towards finding a balance in the body and to take the time to deeply understand the origins of your pain and referral pain. Gaining this information is going to be empowering and will help you move forward.

Strengthening for Long-Term Relief

You can begin by doing the following yoga pose. Start to focus on the abdomen and lower back tissue. It is crucial that you focus your attention on these areas to help relieve your hip pain in the long term.

The best pose that you can incorporate into your weekly yoga practice is the Locust Pose. Did you think that I was going to say to strengthen the abdominal muscles? Well, that's important too, but let’s examine the benefits of Locust Pose.

Locust Pose: Your New Best Friend

Locust Pose is performed while you lay prone on your belly. Lift your head and shoulders while simultaneously lifting your feet and legs off the mat. Firmly press your pelvis into the mat. Start by trying to hold this pose for 30 seconds, and if you can’t hold it for that long, work up to it. A little work every day will give you big results!

If you have a personal yoga practice, try including Locust Pose in your Sun Salutation A routine. Be sure to hold this pose instead of just popping up into Locust and then moving on to the next movement.
