The Yoga Teacher Job: Creating Space for Healing and Growth
As a yoga teacher, the responsibility I carry extends far beyond simply guiding students through poses. In my own practice, I have spent time healing past trauma, processing feelings of disappointment, and working through anger. This is not just important for me as an individual, but also crucial in my role as a teacher. Yoga is about creating space—space for ourselves and others to heal, grow, and transform.
The Role of a Yoga Teacher: Holding Space
A yoga teacher’s primary role is to hold space for students. It’s not our job to dictate what students should feel or how they should experience their practice. The power of yoga lies in its ability to provide a path of self-discovery. As a teacher, I create a safe, non-judgmental space where students can come into their own practice, and where they feel supported but not directed in a specific way.
The heart of yoga lies in self-awareness. That’s where the spiritual aspects of the practice come in. As yoga teachers, our goal is not to "fix" students or force them into certain postures or states of mind. Instead, we guide them to where they can find their own healing, pointing them toward resources like the Yoga Sutras and the eight limbs of yoga. These ancient teachings are the foundation of yoga, providing structure without imposing rigid definitions.
The Danger of Ego in Teaching
Unfortunately, not all yoga teachers approach their practice from a place of spiritual connection. Yoga teachers who are disconnected from their own spirituality may fall into the trap of ego. These teachers can sometimes be judgmental or overly prescriptive, making students feel that they don’t belong or that they need to conform to a particular mold.
Ego-driven teachers may impose guilt, shame, or unwarranted expectations on their students. This creates an atmosphere that feels unsafe and unwelcoming, making it hard for students to connect with their practice or experience personal growth. Yoga should always be a safe haven, a space for self-acceptance, not judgment.
The Student's Role in the Practice
Just as yoga teachers have a responsibility to guide and support, students also have responsibilities within the practice. One of the most important of these is maintaining and respecting personal boundaries.
Respecting personal boundaries within a yoga class is essential to a supportive and nurturing environment. It’s important that each student remains attuned to their own needs, whether that means taking a break during a challenging pose or modifying movements to suit their body. In turn, students should respect the boundaries of others and maintain an environment of mutual respect.
In the same way, students must be responsible for their own progress and practice. Yoga is a deeply personal journey, and it’s up to each individual to be mindful of how they feel, to listen to their bodies, and to understand what their unique practice needs are.
A Simple Rule for Practice: Loving-Kindness
Yoga teaches us to embrace loving-kindness—not just toward others, but toward ourselves. This principle is the cornerstone of the practice. So, when you step onto your mat, ask yourself: "Am I practicing loving-kindness?"
Loving kindness is the antidote to judgment. It's the practice of being compassionate with yourself, acknowledging your limitations, and respecting your body’s wisdom. It’s about creating an environment where you can soften, heal, and grow.
If you find that your practice feels judgmental, either toward yourself or others, take a moment to pause and recalibrate. Cultivating loving-kindness will not only transform your practice, but it will ripple out into your life and the lives of others.
Yoga is More Than a Physical Practice
As a yoga teacher, my responsibility is not only to guide you through physical postures but to help you connect spiritually, mentally, and emotionally with your practice. Yoga is much more than just exercise; it’s about creating space for healing, cultivating loving-kindness, and learning how to be present with yourself in each moment.
Through my own spiritual work and practice, I have learned that yoga is a constant journey of self-discovery and healing. The more we invest in ourselves, the more we can offer to others—whether as teachers, students, or members of a community.
