Reclaiming Self-Care: Simple Steps for Busy Women

Are you guilty of self-care neglect? Is that even a thing?
As women, we often find ourselves in the caregiver role for our family and community, struggling to balance work and home life. This struggle can cost us our overall health and well-being. I get it. In this society, caregiving obligations generally fall onto the shoulders of women. You’re busy trying to balance work, childcare, family demands, household chores—the list goes on and on.
As my friend Stephany recently pointed out, there is a saying out there that you can’t pour from an empty cup. Many of us women are suffering from self-care neglect.

To make matters worse, we often feel guilty about taking time for ourselves or think there just isn’t enough time for things that will restore and renew us. And then there’s the guilt of investing in yourself. There’s so much we carry around, and your inner mindset is the biggest roadblock you face.
It’s important to take a day dedicated to rest and self-care. There are so many easy and affordable options available to you. But first, you need to know that you deserve this time and space for you. Self-care is not selfish—that, my friend, is a totally different topic.
Solutions to self-care neglect will look different for everyone. Here are a few easy options for you to consider:
1. Start Your Morning with a Simple Meditation
If you feel too busy for this, try sitting in a calm and quiet space and taking three deep breaths. This small act can set a peaceful tone for your day and help center your mind.
2. Block Time Off in Your Calendar for You
Use this time to identify and meet your needs. Choose an activity that you enjoy and that helps you unwind and renew your sense of self.
3. Immerse Yourself in an Activity That Brings You Joy
There are many options, such as walking in nature, engaging in a hobby you love, getting a massage, practicing yoga, or participating in another activity that helps you relax.
4. Eat Healthy, Nourishing Foods
There’s a saying: you are what you eat. Try ditching junk food and choose nutritionally dense foods that fuel your body and mind.
5. Journaling
Journaling is a simple yet effective method of self-care. Try journaling after meditation or at any quiet moment throughout your day.
So, get out there and prioritize yourself. Fill up your cup with joy and self-love. Doing these simple things will leave you feeling more joyful, more rested, and energized. As the wise Maya Angelou said, “When you feel better, you do better.”
