The Truth About Yoga Poses: Why Perfect Alignment Isn't Everything
Tonya Yancey | JUN 14, 2024

So often, I hear yoga students speaking about doing 'the pose correctly' or the 'right way' to position themselves in a yoga pose. Yes, to an extent, there is 'a correct way' to do a yoga pose, but I see way too much hyperfocus on this.
For starters, one must take into consideration the anatomical structure of the body, specifically the bony structures, which will determine the shape that the body is able to make for the 'correct' yoga pose. And yes, of course, we need to be mindful of keeping yogis safe in a yoga pose. However, most people are not going to stay in a pose that causes them pain. Many people have pain-avoiding behaviors. Your body knows best!
Understanding Anatomical Variations
Everybody is unique. The bony structures, muscle lengths, and joint capabilities differ from person to person. What this means is that the 'perfect' alignment for one person might not be attainable or comfortable for another. It’s crucial to respect and honor your body's limitations and capabilities.
It's okay if your Warrior II doesn't look exactly like the person next to you.
The Danger of Over-Focusing on Alignment
While good alignment can prevent injuries, an overemphasis on perfecting a pose can lead to stress and frustration. It’s important to focus on the sensations within your body rather than trying to mirror a textbook example of a pose. Your goal should be to feel stable and comfortable, not to achieve a specific aesthetic.
The Misinformation in Yoga Instruction
Be aware that there is a lot of misinformation out there in the yoga classroom. It’s not uncommon for skilled yoga teachers to just repeat information they heard from other yoga teachers and other experts. Please don’t be unkind to your yoga teacher, but just know that it is healthy to question movements and suggested alignment cues, especially if it doesn't feel right in your body. It’s important to feel empowered over your body and health.
Empower Yourself in Your Practice
Let’s focus more on what feels right for you and less on chasing the perfect pose. Listen to your body and modify poses as necessary. Yoga is about creating balance and harmony in your body and mind, not about achieving a picture-perfect pose.
