Recently, I was asked the question, “What is yoga?” This question made me pause and think because that question is a very deep one for me.

First and foremost, yoga is a discipline and a practice. This has different meanings for every yogi who practices yoga. When answering this question, I first started by answering what yoga is not!

There is a perception that yoga is just passive stretching and that it is boring. While deep stretching is a component of yoga, that is not the entirety of what yoga encompasses. Yoga is not something you do; it is something you become.

The word yoga means to unite or to yoke. It is believed that yoga originated in India, and the ancient yogis used yoga to unite the individual's spirit with the divine source.

In Western civilization, yoga has evolved into a science and art of healthy living. Yoga is a practice that involves both the mind and the body. There is evidence that yoga helps with anxiety, stress, flexibility, and strength-building. Additionally, it may reduce pain.

This is what yoga means to me.

At its core, yoga is a healing practice. It is a practice of movement, breath, and meditation. For me, yoga is a journey inward. It is a journey to the truth of who I am, and who you are. Yoga brings a sense of peace, and peace is the foundation of healing.
