The 8 Limbs of Yoga: A Journey to Self-Realization

Wednesday marked the start of the much-anticipated Flow into Fall Yoga Series, and what a fantastic class it was! As we embark on this journey, we're delving deep into the profound teachings of The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. If you've ever wanted to take your yoga practice to the next level, these classes are crafted precisely for that purpose.
The Sutras, dating back thousands of years, are not just a collection of ancient texts; they are a roadmap to inner transformation. At their core, they emphasize that the pursuit of self-realization is perhaps the most significant step we can take in this lifetime, as it guides us on how to transcend our limitations and find profound inner peace.
The Illusion of Separation
One of the fundamental ideas that the Yoga Sutras explore is the illusion of separation between our individual consciousness and Universal Consciousness. This perceived disconnect often leads to suffering because we lose touch with our true selves. In essence, the Yoga Sutras are a practical guide to bridging this gap and reestablishing our union with the divine.
Our exploration begins at the very foundation of these teachings with the Yamas, which are the first of the 8 limbs of yoga. The Yamas are five moral restraints that serve as ethical principles or moral imperatives. They provide a moral compass for our lives, both on and off the yoga mat.
Ahimsa: Non-Harming, Non-Violence
The first Yama, Ahimsa, revolves around the concept of non-harming and non-violence. It encourages us to consider this principle not only in our interactions with others but, crucially, towards ourselves as well. It's a profound notion - recognizing that the first step towards creating a more peaceful world is to cultivate peace within ourselves.
Ahimsa invites us to reflect on the impact of our actions, thoughts, and words, not just on those around us but also on our inner world. By practicing non-harming towards ourselves, we set the foundation for extending this compassion to others and the world around us.
The Wisdom of Remembering
As my master teacher and dear friend, Rolf Gates, aptly puts it, "Yoga is a remembering practice. It is a truth practice. We remember who we are and what our truth is." In essence, the journey of yoga is about rediscovering our authentic selves, the selves we might have lost sight of in the hustle and bustle of life.
If you feel called to embark on this special online yoga series with us, don't hesitate to [register here]. Our classes offer profound insights into the Yamas and all the limbs of yoga, helping you deepen your practice and your understanding of these transformative principles.
Class replays are available, so you can catch up at your own pace. We gather online every Monday and Wednesday at 5 p.m. Pacific, ready to explore these ancient teachings and apply them to our modern lives.
As you delve into the wisdom of the Yamas and the entire 8 limbs of yoga, you'll discover a path that leads not just to physical flexibility but to mental and spiritual liberation. It's a journey towards self-realization and inner harmony.
So, are you ready to take the first step? Join us, and let's flow into fall together on this beautiful voyage of self-discovery.
