Why Stretching Alone Won’t Fix Your Hip Pain—Here’s What Will

In the world of yoga and wellness, one of the most pervasive myths is that stretching is the best (and often only) way to relieve pain—especially hip pain. While stretching can play an important role in alleviating discomfort, it’s not the full picture. Focusing solely on stretching may lead to overstretching, worsening pain, and hindering your progress toward long-term relief.
Why Stretching Alone Isn't Enough
Stretching helps to increase flexibility and mobility, but when it comes to long-term pain relief—especially for chronic hip pain—there's more to the equation. One often overlooked aspect of healing is the importance of strengthening. Building strength in your soft tissues and muscles provides necessary stability and support to your joints, helping to prevent the very pain that stretching is meant to relieve.
Additionally, functional movement and applying load to the body in a controlled, intentional way are key for long-term results. When you focus on strengthening as well as stretching, you’re not only addressing pain relief but also improving balance and stability for your everyday movements.

Understanding the Underlying Causes of Your Pain
Often, yoga students dealing with pain will immediately focus on loosening up tight areas through stretches. However, without understanding the root cause of your pain, stretching alone can backfire. Overstretching, particularly in areas that are already hypermobile, can lead to greater instability in the body, wearing down the soft tissues and joints over time. Many yogis, especially those with hypermobility (often referred to as “bendy”), are prone to this mistake. Instead of healing, they may inadvertently worsen their pain.
Hypermobile? Here’s What You Need to Know
If you're someone who’s naturally very flexible or “bendy,” you may fall into the hypermobile category. It’s essential to recognize that while hypermobility can make poses and stretches feel accessible, it can also be harmful in the long run if not managed properly. For hypermobile yogis, too much stretching without enough strength-building can lead to pain, joint instability, and even injury.
For yogis dealing with hypermobility, I recommend focusing on poses that strengthen the hips and core. A balanced practice of strengthening, flexibility, and proper alignment is essential for protecting your joints and reducing pain.
The Dangers of Overstretching
Overstretching can cause real damage, especially if you’re dealing with underlying issues such as soft tissue injuries. If you have a tear in the soft tissues of your body—whether it’s in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments—stretching that area will likely worsen the injury, causing more pain. Avoid stretching any area where there is an active injury and instead focus on gentle movement and strengthening.
Incorporating gentle poses like the Bridge Pose and Locust Pose, which emphasize strength and stability, can help heal your body while protecting you from further harm.

Conclusion: Strength and Flexibility Go Hand in Hand
It’s time to debunk the myth that stretching alone is the answer to pain relief. A well-rounded yoga practice incorporates both flexibility and strength to promote healing, enhance functional movement, and support long-term pain relief. By paying attention to the signals your body gives you, building strength in the right areas, and understanding your pain, you’ll move toward a healthier, more balanced yoga practice.
Remember, yoga is not just about flexibility; it’s about balance, both in your body and mind. Don’t let the myth of stretching derail your progress—embrace the full spectrum of what yoga has to offer.
